House Guests

These two birds have chosen the rafter of our porch to sleep on every night. I don't know what kind of birds they are, or why they don't have a nest somewhere, but it is the most wonderful feeling to contribute to the shelter of this precious couple.

[update] I'm pretty sure these birds are Cave Swallows.

Naomi, I know how you love creatures great and small, but please do not allow these lovely birds to build their nest under your porch. You will fight them every year (from muddy leavings to bird droppings). I love my pair that come back, but I do not let them build under my porch.

They've already left lots of droppings. I don't mind cleaning them up. How bad is the mud? Is it just like clots that dry and I can sweep up easily?

Once the babies come it will be interesting. The mud will be big plops on the ground. I love watching them and sitting with them as they fly around. Our neighbors let them build and when the babies come, a person can not use the front door anymore. They like to defend their children.

Beautiful. Oh, how sweet. I relate to your feelings about it. My sole pets are the birds I feed (a few geese and ducks included) in my front yard.
